The scheme is available at no cost to anyone with a PayPal account. Customers can join via the app with “no annual fees, no gotchas, and no reason not to join”, according to PayPal. The bonus points can be redeemed for £20 off at PayPal checkout.

In emails to customers, PayPal said: “Sign up to PayPal+ for free and get the PayPal Debit Card. The perfect combination to supercharge your spending. Use your new PayPal Debit Card to pay for any eligible purchase, anywhere Mastercard is accepted.”

The PayPal Debit Card is a Mastercard linked to the user’s PayPal balance, allowing spending in-store, online, or cash withdrawals at ATMs. If the balance is insufficient, PayPal will draw from a linked bank or debit card.
