For British holidaymakers, the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Madrid have long been top destinations. However, a new study has revealed that a different Spanish gem offers an unbeatably convenient experience for those exploring on foot.
Andalusia's Hidden Gem Tops The Charts
Airport transfer specialists at Hoppa have conducted research ranking European cities by their walkability. To the surprise of many, the southern Spanish city of Seville claimed the number one spot, surpassing other popular destinations. The top five was completed by Athens, Istanbul, Krakow, and Amsterdam.
According to the experts, the key to Seville's success is its compact and flat layout. A walking route connecting the city's major landmarks is approximately 2km (1.2 miles) long with a minimal elevation gain of just 3 metres. This means visitors can comfortably see all the top sights in around 30 minutes.
A Stroll Through History and Culture
Despite its status as a pedestrian paradise, Seville is often overlooked by the millions of tourists who flock to Spain's more famous coastal resorts. Located near the legendary Costa del Sol, the city experiences summer temperatures averaging a hot 36°C.
The recommended walking tour showcases Seville's rich history. It includes the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See (Seville Cathedral), built on the site of a 12th-century mosque. Just a short walk away is the Alcázar of Seville, a historic royal palace originating from the city's Islamic era and later rebuilt in the Mudéjar style.
Both of these architectural masterpieces were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, along with the General Archive of the Indies. Other must-see attractions on the route include the Torre del Oro and the Giralda Tower, the latter being the old minaret of the Arab mosque.
Expert Advice For The Perfect Trip
Matthew Hall, Managing Director at Hoppa, commented on the surprising findings. "Our ranking showed that some places are more suitable to be explored on foot than others," he said. "Doing your research before booking your flights is essential so you can properly enjoy your city break. Seville is a great alternative to the more popular Spanish city destinations Barcelona and Madrid. You can visit the top sites in less than 30 minutes."
He also offered practical advice for travellers: "Even though you will mostly walk when you arrive, don't forget about getting to the city from the airport first. Booking an airport transfer in advance ensures peace of mind so you can focus on other tasks like planning your walking routes instead."
Official Spanish tourism sources further highlight Seville's accessibility, noting that while it has Spain's largest old town, it remains easy to navigate on foot. For those wanting a break, the city also offers a public bicycle rental service and over 180 kilometres of cycle lanes.
