Scots heading to Spain this year have been warned about additional travel documents required post-Brexit. Millions of holidaymakers visit Spain annually, but new rules apply since the UK left the European Union.
Passport Validity
Your passport must have a 'date of issue' within 10 years of your arrival date. If renewed before October 1, 2018, it may show an issue date beyond 10 years, making it invalid for the Schengen zone, which includes Spain.
Entry/Exit System (EES)
Upon arrival, visitors must scan their passport, have their face photographed, and provide four fingerprint scans. The digital EES record is valid for three years or until passport expiry, whichever comes first.
Additional Documents
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises UK travellers to carry:
- A valid passport
- A return or onward ticket
- Valid travel insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
- Accommodation confirmation (hotel booking, address of owned property, or a 'carta de invitation' if staying with friends or family)
These measures ensure compliance with Schengen area rules, which allow a maximum 90-day stay within any 180-day period.
