Bratislava Tops Ryanair's 2026 List: Cheap Beer, Castles & Crowd-Free Charm
Ryanair's 2026 No.1: Overlooked Bratislava with cheap beer

Budget airline Ryanair has unveiled its number one destination for 2026, shining a spotlight on a historic European capital that British travellers frequently bypass. The city in question is Bratislava, the often-overlooked capital of Slovakia, which promises rich culture, stunning architecture, and remarkably affordable prices, including beer that can cost less than bottled water.

An Undiscovered Gem in the Heart of Europe

While neighbouring Prague and Vienna draw crowds of millions each year, Bratislava welcomes a more modest one million annual visitors. This is set to change in 2026, with Ryanair launching new routes and savvy travellers seeking destinations free from overwhelming tourist throngs. The city offers a compact, walkable centre brimming with history, making it an ideal year-round budget getaway.

Historic Splendour and Culinary Delights

Dominating the skyline is the majestic Bratislava Castle, a 13th-century Baroque fortress perched 80 metres above the River Danube. Visitors can explore its gold-leaf adorned interiors, stroll the Baroque Garden, and climb the Crown Tower for breathtaking panoramic views.

The charming medieval Old Town is home to landmarks like the 14th-century Michael's Gate (Michalská brána) and the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral. Winding streets lead to cosy cafes and rustic restaurants serving traditional Slovak fare. A must-try is Bryndzové Halušky – potato dumplings with sheep cheese and crispy bacon.

Affordable Nights and Modern Thrills

Bratislava's reputation for value is legendary, especially when it comes to drinks. In tourist areas, a large beer typically costs between €2-3 (roughly £1.70-2.60), with supermarket prices so low that many note beer is cheaper than water. The nightlife is vibrant, with the Old Town hosting a mix of traditional pubs and chic cocktail bars with clubs open until dawn.

For a modern contrast, the UFO Observation Deck offers 360-degree views from its 95-metre flying saucer-shaped tower, complete with a late-night cocktail bar. Don't miss the unique Blue Church, an Instagram-favourite masterpiece of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture.

Ryanair will fly to Bratislava from Edinburgh, London-Stansted, and Manchester, with a seasonal route from Leeds-Bradford. Wizz Air also operates a year-round service from London-Luton. Flight times from London start at just over two hours, with one-way fares from Stansted beginning at £37.
