Manchester's Christmas Market Crowned UK's Best, Outshines Edinburgh
Manchester's Christmas Market Beats Edinburgh to Top Spot

As a New Zealander now living in London, my Christmases have traditionally been sun-drenched affairs. Last year's attempt to embrace a classic winter Christmas at the Edinburgh market left me underwhelmed, so this year I gave the festive season a second chance with a trip to a different city: Manchester.

My timing was impeccable. My visit coincided with Manchester's Christmas Market being officially crowned the best in the UK by both Time Out and the holiday experts at Christmas Tree World. After spending a day exploring its offerings, I understood the accolade completely.

A Culinary Quest in Albert Square

The day was bright and sunny, and the markets were buzzing with energy. I focused my efforts on the main hub in Albert Square, which was complete with a helter skelter and a Ferris wheel. My mission, however, was singular: to find a legendary Yorkshire pudding wrap.

Despite my boyfriend's scepticism about its festive credentials, we turned a corner and there it was. I opted for the pork version served in a bowl for £11. The portion was absolutely enormous, featuring beautifully seasoned meat, perfectly cooked accompaniments, and a thick, rich, salty gravy. It was so substantial I couldn't finish it, but it was precisely what I had been craving.

Mulled Wine and a Mug Deposit Surprise

Next, I braved another first: mulled wine. A previous experience with mulled cider in Edinburgh had been a disappointment, so I was nervous. I chose an apple and blackberry mulled wine, which I believed cost £6.50.

I was surprised to find it actually cost £10 due to a £3.50 mug deposit I had overlooked. Fortunately, it was worth every penny of the confusion. It tasted delicious, like a hot Ribena, and warmed me through completely. I'm still awaiting my refund for returning the mug, but the drink itself was a triumph.

Why Manchester Outshines Edinburgh

My final treat was an £8 apple and cinnamon crumble with vanilla custard. While not the best I've ever had, it was sweet, satisfying, and the perfect end to my visit.

In my view, the Manchester Christmas Market completely outshines the Edinburgh one. Despite being bustling and lively, I could navigate it with ease and never queued for more than five minutes. The food was superior, and every stall was manned by friendly, cheerful staff. I left feeling energised and genuinely excited for Christmas, and I would strongly suggest anyone in the vicinity pay it a visit.
