A breathtaking city in France, located less than three hours from the UK, is being compared to a scene straight from a Disney movie. This revelation comes as the travel platform Omio released its list of the top ten most beautiful destinations to experience real-life fairytale charm, timed with the release of the film Wicked: For Good on November 21.
A Slice of Disney Magic in France
The enchanting city of Colmar in France tops the list, captivating travellers with its Disney-inspired architecture, picturesque canals, and rows of charming pastel-coloured houses. Its medieval old town offers a storybook setting that feels a world away from the UK, yet is remarkably accessible.
The journey from London is straightforward: a 1 hour and 30 minute flight to Strasbourg, followed by a short 55-minute drive to the city centre. This makes it an ideal destination for a magical weekend escape.
The Rise of 'Holding Space' Holidays
This list is part of Omio's latest 'Now Next 2025-2026 Travel Report', which uncovers new trends in how people travel. A significant finding is the emergence of 'holding space' trips, a phrase that went viral during the Wicked press tour in 2024. It means being emotionally present with your companions.
The report found that more than a third of Gen Z (36%) are more likely to travel with friends they 'hold space' for in the coming year, compared to just 12% of Boomers. Omio suggests these friendship-focused journeys can deepen bonds and create lasting memories, much like the evolving relationship between the musical's characters, Elphaba and Glinda.
Film-Inspired and Under-the-Radar Travel
Brits are increasingly letting their screens influence their travel plans. The report shows that 28% of Brits say they are influenced by film and TV when choosing a destination. While the land of Oz isn't a viable option, whimsical, fairytale-inspired locations are on the rise.
Travellers are also seeking more unique experiences. The data reveals that 32% of people prefer under-the-radar locations that would make others 'green with envy'. Furthermore, wellbeing is a priority, with 59% of travellers wanting to return from a holiday feeling recharged. Internationally, almost two-fifths (37%) of women want to feel connected, and 44% are planning family and friend reunions.
Veronica Diquattro, President of Consumer and Supply Business Europe at Omio, commented: "Gen Z leads the charge. They are purposeful planners, determined to travel more, for longer, and sustainably. Our report reveals a new age of smart, conscious and value-driven travel."
