Copenhagen Named Europe's Premier Family City Break Destination
City breaks with children can be an enriching way to introduce them to new cultures, and one European city has emerged as the ultimate family-friendly destination. According to LateRooms' Family Breaks Index, Copenhagen in Denmark has secured the top spot for families, thanks to its highly walkable centre and excellent accessibility for pushchairs.
Why Copenhagen Tops the List for Family Travel
The index analysed 50 European cities based on practical factors such as average flight times, airport transfer efficiency, walkability, pushchair accessibility, availability of family-friendly accommodation, and kid-oriented activities. Copenhagen excelled across these metrics, making it a standout choice for parents with babies, toddlers, or young children.
Located just under a two-hour flight from the UK, Copenhagen offers a manageable journey for families. The city's metro service provides a seamless connection from the airport to the city centre in approximately 15 minutes, eliminating the stress of multiple transfers.
Exploring Copenhagen with Ease and Fun
Copenhagen's walkable layout encourages young children to get plenty of exercise, while its high accessibility score ensures that families with buggies can navigate main attractions comfortably. When little legs tire, strollers offer a convenient rest option during exploration.
Family-friendly attractions abound in the city. Tivoli Gardens, one of the world's oldest amusement parks, is situated in the heart of Copenhagen. This sprawling park retains a vintage charm and features fairground rides, themed lands, restaurants, and playgrounds for a wholesome day out.
The Experimentarium combines science museum exhibits with playground fun, offering interactive displays like water playgrounds and construction sites that teach science through play. Nationalmuseet, Denmark's national museum, includes a dedicated children's area where kids can play on a Viking ship, pretend to cook in a medieval kitchen, and engage with interactive exhibitions.
Additional Activities and Dining for Families
Canal tours provide a popular and novel way for families to see the city, with children enjoying boat rides and spotting landmarks such as the Little Mermaid statue. Other highlights include walking up the Rundetårn for panoramic city views or visiting Amalienborg Palace to witness the impressive changing of the guard ceremonies.
While LEGOLAND is too far for a day trip, Copenhagen's central LEGO store features giant LEGO figures and interactive displays to entertain kids, evoking nostalgia for parents.
Dining in Copenhagen caters to families, with many restaurants offering kids' menus. Hyttefadet in the Nyhavn neighbourhood serves dishes like meatballs and fries for children, alongside modern Danish cuisine for adults. Restaurant Nyhavn 41 provides classics such as pasta and nuggets for kids, while adults can sample traditional smørrebrød.
