Sydney's Chinese Noodle House Closes After Decade in Chinatown
Chinese Noodle House Closes in Sydney's Chinatown

A cherished fixture of Sydney's dining scene, the Chinese Noodle House, has announced it will serve its final meals in late December, leaving local food enthusiasts heartbroken.

End of an Era for Chinatown Eatery

Located on Thomas Street in the heart of Chinatown, the popular restaurant confirmed its impending permanent closure through notices displayed in its window and shared on its Instagram account, @housechinesenoodles. The establishment has been a staple in the Prince Centre food precinct for years.

The closure stems directly from the landlord's decision not to renew the restaurant's lease, forcing the family-run business to vacate the premises. A spokesperson for the family, Eric, confirmed to Daily Mail that they have operated the venue for the past decade, having taken it over from the previous operator, who was the landlord.

In a heartfelt message, the owners expressed their sadness, stating: 'It has been our honour and pleasure to serve you, and we are deeply grateful for your companionship along the way.' Eric echoed this sentiment, adding, 'We feel very sad to leave this place and are sorry for all our customers, as we're no longer able to provide good food and good service to them.'

Community Reaction and Future Hopes

The announcement triggered an immediate outpouring of dismay from loyal patrons on social media. The news was widely shared on online forums, with one devastated diner declaring it a 'dark day for humanity,' while another lamented the 'end of an era.' Many described the venue as an 'iconic Sydney institution.'

However, the closure notice offered a glimmer of hope, hinting at plans to resurrect the restaurant elsewhere. 'We hope that in the near future we will once again have the opportunity to bring you delicious food and service,' the notice read. A separate poster urged customers to follow their Instagram account for updates on a potential new location.

This promise was met with enthusiastic support from the restaurant's fanbase. 'Wherever you go, we shall follow,' pledged one follower, while another commented, 'This is the worst news ever. We'll follow you to the ends of the earth.' Others began planning final visits to enjoy signature dishes like the famed braised eggplant, pan-fried dumplings, and Xinjiang stir-fried noodles one last time.

Navigating Chinatown Confusion

The closure announcement also sparked confusion among some Chinatown regulars, due to the presence of another, similarly named restaurant just metres away. Chinese Noodle Restaurant, located on the opposite corner of the same Prince Centre mall, has been a successful operation for over 30 years.

Both establishments specialise in Northern Chinese cuisine, offer nearly identical menu items at matching prices, and feature outdoor seating with umbrellas—green for the closing Chinese Noodle House and red for the longstanding Chinese Noodle Restaurant. This led to numerous online queries from patrons unsure which venue was shutting down.

Some commentators suggested that Chinese Noodle House originally opened to capitalise on the overflow of customers from the perennially popular and often-queued Chinese Noodle Restaurant. While the House prepares to close its doors in December, the original Chinese Noodle Restaurant continues to operate and thrive at its long-standing location.
