Cheapest Christmas Market Break with £20 Flights

For many Brits, the aroma of mulled wine and the sight of wooden chalets selling unique gifts define the magic of the festive season. Now, a stunning European city has been crowned the cheapest destination for a Christmas market break, offering an enchanting experience without the hefty price tag.

The Fairytale Escape: Riga's Christmas Magic

The capital of Latvia, Riga, is the budget-friendly winter wonderland you've been searching for. This picturesque city, renowned for its pedestrian-only medieval Old Town and breathtaking Art Nouveau architecture, provides the perfect backdrop for a festive getaway.

The heart of the celebration is the traditional Riga Christmas Market in Dome Square, which runs from 28 November to 4 January. The market is a hub of festive activity, packed with stalls from local Latvian artisans. Visitors can find exquisite handcrafted gifts, including beeswax candles, cosy woollen gloves, and creative kits for making festive decor.

Affordability That Beats Rivals

The annual Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer has revealed that Riga is one of the most affordable European cities for a two-night weekend Christmas market experience. This places it in stark contrast to more expensive destinations like Copenhagen and Vienna.

The Post Office provided a detailed breakdown of expected costs for two people on a two-night break in Riga:

  • Four cups of coffee from a cafe or bar: £11.49
  • Two three-course meals for two (including a bottle of wine): £132.89
  • Two return bus/train transfers from the airport: £7.18
  • Four glasses of mulled wine at the market: £14.37
  • Four pieces of cake or gingerbread: £12.57

When combined with a two-night B&B stay and direct flights for two, the total cost comes to just £555.50, or £277.75 per person.

This is a fraction of the cost of a similar trip to Copenhagen, which would set a couple back a staggering £1,056.55, or Vienna at £926.41.

Incredibly Low Flight Prices

The appeal of a Riga break is significantly boosted by remarkably cheap direct flights from several UK airports. Travelers can snap up a mid-week return flight from London Stansted for around £45 per person.

Even more impressive are the prices from other regional airports:

  • From Leeds: flights can be found for as little as £20 one way.
  • From Manchester: direct flights start from around £25.
  • From East Midlands Airport: prices begin at approximately £22.

Laura Plunkett, head of Travel Money at the Post Office, advised: "Budget-conscious travellers stand to save hundreds of pounds if they choose carefully. The cost of flights and accommodation will have a significant impact on overall costs, so it is doubly important for holidaymakers planning a trip to do their homework."

With its captivating charm, vibrant market, and undeniable value, Riga presents an unmissable opportunity for a magical and affordable Christmas market break this festive season.
