British travellers are venturing overseas in record numbers, with projections indicating over 92 million outbound trips were made last year. However, this surge in holiday excitement is accompanied by a costly and frustrating issue: the loss of personal belongings while abroad.

Fresh analysis from Post Office Travel Insurance uncovers what items holidaymakers most frequently misplace, the substantial financial impact, and the critical importance of adequate travel coverage. For those journeying without insurance, the most prevalent replacement expense falls between £401 and £500, with some unfortunate travellers facing bills exceeding £1,000 to recover lost possessions.

In 2024 alone, Post Office disbursed more than £7 million in claims for lost, damaged, or stolen baggage. This staggering figure underscores the financial risks associated with international travel.

Top Items Lost by British Travellers

According to a survey of 2,001 UK travellers and internal claims data, jewellery emerges as the most commonly lost category during holidays. This includes rings, bracelets, chains, and watches, with 31 per cent of respondents reporting they have lost such an item.

The remaining entries in the top five are:

  • Wallets or credit cards
  • Cameras
  • Passports or other essential travel documents

Young adults aged 18 to 24 are particularly prone to losing items, with a combined likelihood of 47 per cent.

Adam Edinburgh, Head of Post Office Travel and New Products, commented: 'Travel mishaps aren't just about lost phones and passports; our data shows people are claiming for everything from bagpipes to wedding dresses. While these stories might raise a smile, they highlight a serious point that replacing lost items can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds. That's why having the right travel insurance matters, because whether it's something you use every day or something a little more unusual, peace of mind is priceless.'

Insurance Gap and Expert Advice

Despite the evident risks, a recent study indicates that nearly half of Britons—46 per cent—have travelled abroad without any form of travel insurance. This oversight can lead to significant financial hardship if items are lost or stolen.

Martin Lewis from MoneySavingExpert has issued a stern warning to travellers, urging them to secure travel insurance immediately upon booking their trip. He emphasised: 'The 'As Soon As You Book' (ASAB) rule isn't just so you don't forget later. It's because one of the big protections of travel insurance is to cover you in case something happens before your trip that means you can't go.'

Steps to Take If You Lose an Item

If you misplace an item while on holiday, it is crucial to notify the relevant local authority—such as the police, hotel management, or transport provider—within 48 hours. Travel insurance providers typically require an official report or reference number to validate a claim. Delays or insufficient documentation can result in claim rejection, leaving travellers to bear the full replacement cost.
