OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.5, Moves Closer to 'Super App' Vision
OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.5, Steps Toward Super App

OpenAI has announced a significant leap toward its vision of a 'super app' with the launch of GPT-5.5, its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date. The ChatGPT creator described the new model, released on Thursday, as 'a new class of intelligence' capable of performing tasks autonomously without human supervision.

Enhanced Capabilities

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 excels in conducting online research, analyzing data, creating documents, operating software, and writing code. The model is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers.

OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman highlighted the model's intuitive nature, noting that it can understand 'messy, multi-part tasks' independently. 'What's really special about this model is how much more it can do with less guidance,' he said.

CEO Sam Altman added, 'In my experience, it 'gets what to do.''

Early User Reactions

Early adopters have praised GPT-5.5 for its ability to complete tasks without supervision. Pietro Schirano, CEO of AI design tool MagicPath, claimed, 'While testing GPT-5.5, I had my first taste of AGI,' referring to artificial general intelligence.

Path to the Super App

OpenAI stated that GPT-5.5 represents a step toward its upcoming 'super app,' designed to enable users to perform actions across various apps and tools using AI agents. Altman wrote on X after the launch, 'We want to be a platform for every company, scientist, entrepreneur, and person. My whole career has largely been about the magic of startups, and I think we are about to see that magic at hyperscale.'

Meanwhile, former OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, who left to pursue AI ventures through xAI, is also working on a similar concept. Musk's 'everything app' aims to transform X into a platform handling all aspects of digital life, from social networking and messaging to shopping and banking, akin to China's WeChat or India's PayTM.
