Nintendo has surprised fans with the announcement of a new Star Fox game, but not everyone is thrilled. After months of speculation, the company revealed the title in a late-night broadcast, confirming it will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.
Another Remake of the Classic
The game, simply titled Star Fox, is technically a brand-new title but serves as another remake of the original 1993 SNES classic. In fact, this marks the third time the game has been remade, following the N64 version (which borrowed heavily from the original) and the 2011 3DS port. While the Switch 2 version boasts significantly improved graphics and more realistic character models, some fans are growing weary of retreading familiar ground.
Mixed Reactions to New Look
The updated character designs have sparked debate online. Fox McCloud's new appearance has been compared to Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, a stark contrast to his 3D-animated cameo in the recent Super Mario Galaxy movie. Social media comments range from excitement to frustration, with one Reddit user exclaiming, "I can't believe we're doing 64 again," and a YouTube comment joking, "Star Fox has officially become Nintendo's Skyrim."
Gameplay and Switch 2 Features
A 15-minute presentation showcased gameplay across various planets, sticking to the series' signature on-rails shooting with multiple vehicles and powerful weapons. The Switch 2's hardware offers new features: the Joy-Con can be used in mouse mode for a first-person perspective, and compatible cameras allow players to replace their GameChat avatar with an animated Star Fox character that mirrors their facial movements.
This release comes a decade after the last Star Fox game, Star Fox Zero for Wii U in 2016. Despite the long wait, some fans are disappointed that Nintendo is revisiting the same well. As one gamer put it, "Nintendo, this is the 4th time you've shown Star Fox 64 in class."
Will you be picking up Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches on June 25, 2026?
