Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could disrupt his old club's plans to sign Mateus Fernandes this summer. The West Ham midfielder has emerged as a primary target for United during the current transfer window.
Midfield Reinforcement Priority for United
Strengthening the midfield has become a key priority for Michael Carrick as the club prepares for a return to Champions League football. A deal has already been agreed with Atalanta for Ederson, but United are keen to add another central midfielder, with Fernandes firmly on their radar.
Real Madrid Enter the Race
However, competition for the Portuguese international has arrived in the form of Real Madrid. The Spanish giants confirmed Mourinho's appointment as manager last week. Spanish outlet Marca reports that Fernandes is 'highly regarded' by Mourinho, with Real Madrid making the signing of a midfielder a top priority this summer.
The La Liga club have also been linked with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandes, who is reportedly 'offering himself' to the club.
United's Stance on Transfer Fee
United have made their position clear to West Ham, insisting they will not be held to ransom in their pursuit of Fernandes. The Hammers are holding out for a fee of around £80 million, despite suffering relegation from the Premier League at the end of the campaign.
The player is keen on a move to Old Trafford, yet United's current valuation falls considerably short of West Ham's demands due to concerns over his lack of experience at the highest level. A bid is expected later this week, but United are prepared to wait to secure a deal at a price they deem reasonable.
Fernandes' Performance and United's Midfield Overhaul
The 21-year-old made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists. He previously impressed in the league for Southampton in the 2024/25 season.
United are poised for a significant midfield overhaul this summer. Casemiro has already left the club, while Manuel Ugarte is expected to depart Old Trafford within the next couple of months.
Having endured a challenging spell under Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo cemented his place as a key figure under Carrick during the second half of the campaign. As a result, the new-look midfield could be built around the England international.
