Capri Pants: The Divisive Trend I'm Wearing on Repeat This Summer
Why I'm Wearing Capri Pants on Repeat This Summer

When Capri pants began creeping into the fashion-conscious last year, I was reminded of the baggy, low-rise style circa 2005, and it was a strong no from me. But, just like ballet flats have shaken off their school association, Capri pants have grown up – and grown on me. The 2026 version takes inspiration from their 1990’s iteration. Slim-cut, mid-rise, and tailored, they lean into a covetable, minimalist aesthetic. Capri pants are a smart alternative to leggings or denim, though just as flattering.

A Brief History of Capri Pants

Created in 1948 by German fashion designer Sonja de Lennart, Capri trousers were designed as a feminine, three-quarter-length alternative to men’s trousers. Her small, distinctive slit on the outer leg has endured in designs to this day. Intrinsically linked with the Italian dolce vita style, the pants were named after the island of Capri, where they soon became a staple of resort wear. Head there this summer, or to the neighbouring Amalfi Coast and Positano, and you’ll see them once again define holiday style.

Capri pants enjoyed global popularity after Audrey Hepburn wore pairs in the Hollywood movies Sabrina and Roman Holiday. Fading into near-obscurity in the seventies and eighties (thank you, flared and bell-bottom trousers), they reemerged as ‘pedal pushers’ in the nineties, worn by the era’s It-girls Sarah Jessica Parker and Winona Ryder.

How to Style Capri Pants This Summer

This season, Capri pants arrive in every form – from form-fitting leggings and polka dot styles to crease-front trousers. After my initial reticence, I’ve embraced them wholeheartedly: a gingham Nobody’s Child pair propped up my wardrobe on a trip to Italy, while Adanola’s coffee-brown leggings are a weekend essential. Meanwhile, a more tailored black pair from H&M have been my go-to for evening events. If you’re reaching for Capri pants this summer, here’s how to style them this season – and the best pairs to shop from the high street.

Best Capri Pants at a Glance

  • Best Black Capri’s – H&M crease-leg Capri trousers: £27.99
  • Best Gingham Capri’s – Nobody’s Child gingham Capri trousers: £75
  • Best Capri Leggings – Adanola ultimate Capri leggings: £38

H&M Crease-Leg Capri Trousers

These H&M capri pants are endlessly wearable and a steal at less than £30. Made from a crepe fabric with a smart crease down the front, think of them as a stylish alternative to black suit trousers. The high waistline creates a flattering silhouette while the small side slit nods to Lennart’s original design. I’ve worn the capris with everything from black kitten heels and a floaty silk shirt, to a fitted frog-fastening top and ballet flats. The black trousers also work well with white blouses and matching black waistcoats.

Nobody’s Child Gingham Capri Trousers

Nobody’s Child’s gingham capri trousers have received countless compliments. Their high waistband combine with a three-quarter length and dainty side slit. Crafted from a jersey material, the pants have a comfortable amount of stretch and pockets (hurrah!) for a practical touch. From Italy to Brighton, I’ve styled my pair with cutesy white blouses, T-shirts and oversized black blazers. A dainty kitten heel is the perfect feminine match, but the trousers look equally stylish with flip flops and ballet flats.

Adanola Ultimate Capri Leggings

The off-duty queen herself, Kendall Jenner has been spotted in these Capri leggings. Available in various stylish colourways, I love the coffee bean pair. The perfect shade of tonal brown, the Capri pants boast all the signatures of Adanola’s cult leggings. Think a flattering wide, high waistband and moisture-wicking fabric that’s buttery soft against skin. I’ve never been one to wear lifestyle leggings outside the house – but I’ve made an exception with these. Contrast the sporty, sculpting fit with a milkmaid blouse, halterneck linen top or an oversized long-sleeve white T-shirt.
