Wetherspoon has confirmed that national flag bunting will be displayed in its pubs across the country as the World Cup kicks off. The major pub chain lifted a ban on flags in 2024, ending a controversy that began in 2018.
Background of the Flag Ban
In 2018, Wetherspoon found itself at the centre of a 'patriotism' row when its venues were asked not to hang England flags displaying the St George’s Cross, or any other nation’s flag, during the World Cup. Instead, pubs were decorated with bunting representing all 32 competing nations. At the time, Eddie Gershon told the Daily Express: "We wouldn’t want an England flag being put up in the heart of a pub by a staff member. Whether flags are put up in staff rooms is up to the discretion of the manager. We have sent all pubs bunting, which includes flags of all the teams."
Reversal of the Ban
The flag ban was revoked for the Euros in 2024, and Wetherspoon revealed that pubs would be allowed to fly England and Scotland flags if they wished. Today, Gershon told the Daily Express: "Wetherspoon has supplied World Cup bunting with flags of all competing nations to its pubs."
World Cup Promotions and Screenings
When asked about World Cup special promotions, Gershon added: "Wetherspoon pubs have long-established food and drink offers available Monday to Thursday and these will continue during the World Cup." Wetherspoon venues around the UK will show World Cup matches for this year's tournament. On its website, the chain says: "Enjoy the World Cup with a selection of international drinks, many hailing from the same countries as the teams competing. Why not try something different? With food served until 11pm, it’s a good chance to try the food menu, including 3 for £15 on small plates."
