Once you have discovered sourdough, it is hard to go back to any other bread. Its distinctive tangy flavour and chewy texture are unbeatable, making it a staple for many. Jason's is often the go-to brand, with a loyal following for its ciabattin variety, which is perfect for toasting. Priced between £2.15 and £2.50, it seems reasonable, but budget-conscious shoppers may wonder if supermarket own-brand alternatives can match the quality. To find out, I tested sourdough loaves from Tesco, Aldi, Asda, and Sainsbury's against Jason's.
The Taste Test Setup
With the toaster warmed up and Kerrygold butter ready, I sampled a slice from each loaf. Prices ranged from £1.50 to £2.44, with the most expensive being one of the smallest. Jason's ciabattin was included as the benchmark. The goal was to find a worthy alternative that could save money without sacrificing taste.
Jason's Ciabattin - £2.15
This is my usual choice, delivering classic chewy sourdough with depth of flavour from its preparation. Slices are smaller than traditional loaves but fit the toaster perfectly. It freezes well and offers plenty of slices. The only downside is it is not ideal for sandwiches, but for toast, it is flawless. Score: 8/10
Asda Exceptional - £2.44
The priciest loaf had only eight slices, which was disappointing. Asda's 'exceptional' range is usually reliable, but this fell short. The taste was underwhelming, and the consistency was dense. However, the slices were good-sized and soft, earning an extra point. Score: 7/10
Aldi Sourdough - £1.75
This loaf did not resemble sourdough to me. It lacked chewiness, felt dry, and the crust was not crisp. A rye variety was available, which might be better, but the white version left me unimpressed. Score: 5/10
Sainsbury's Sourdough - £1.95
Sainsbury's is not my usual shop, but this loaf was surprisingly good value. It had a tangy flavour, was wonderfully soft, and toasted brilliantly. The slices were thinly cut, with some small pieces and noticeable holes, but it was my runner-up. Score: 8/10
Tesco Finest Sourdough - £1.50
The clear winner. The crust was spot on, with a rich flavour and the right amount of saltiness. It tasted even better toasted. Slices were a great size, though there were only eight per pack and some holes. The flavour edged out Jason's. Currently £1.50 with Clubcard or £2 without. Score: 8/10
