Update after Liverpool city centre fast food chain disappears without a word. Another brand has already moved into the Liverpool city centre shop.

Subway on Hanover Street Replaced by S&S News

The replacement for a fast food branch in Liverpool city centre has been confirmed. The ECHO previously reported that the Subway on Hanover Street, part of Liverpool ONE, had been left empty after the brand removed all of its signage and furniture.

At the time, the signature green and yellow colours synonymous with the American restaurant franchise were nowhere to be seen on the busy street. The Liverpool location's opening hours had also been changed to "closed" on Subway's website.

The ECHO reached out to Subway and Liverpool ONE for comment, although the latter declined to do so. Thankfully for Subway fans, Merseyside is home to numerous other sandwich shops belonging to the chain.

The city of Liverpool alone has around 46 locations as of early 2026, making it a major hub for the brand. Customers can still enjoy Subway at Exchange Street and Hardman Street.

The Hanover Street Subway has now been converted into an S&S News store. Signs have already been installed at the shop, informing customers that it will sell confectionery, American drinks, vapes and e-liquids.

The signs for the new store have gone up at the former Subway site. The store will also offer PayPoint services, as well as parcel collection and sending facilities.

The brand may look familiar to those in the city, as S&S News has occupied a unit in the middle of Liverpool ONE for a number of years.

The compact mini-newsagent is located on Paradise Street, flanked by shops on either side and close to the intersection with Wall Street, making it difficult to miss.

The ECHO contacted Liverpool ONE to ask whether the two stores would operate alongside each other or if the Hanover Street branch would replace the original location. The shopping complex declined to comment.

It comes as the other kiosk on Paradise Street is set to become Blank Street Coffee. Founded in 2020 as a small coffee cart in the garden of a Brooklyn diner, the company has rapidly expanded across the United States and the UK.

It opened its first UK site in London in 2022 and now operates in cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with further openings planned in Bristol and Cambridge.

It will replace the long-standing Krispy Kreme unit, which has occupied the site for 15 years. Krispy Kreme opened there in April 2011 to huge public interest, with customers reportedly queuing overnight to be among the first to be served.
