Poundland has confirmed that its wave of store closures is drawing to a close, with only a handful of locations still set to shut in January and February 2026. The discount chain, which was bought by an investment firm for just £1 last year, has closed over 100 stores as part of a major restructuring. Its store count fell from 800 to 651 in 2025, resulting in thousands of job losses.
The retailer has introduced a new pricing structure among other changes aimed at improving business performance. However, the closures have affected many communities across the UK, with stores shutting throughout 2025 and some also closing in 2024. Poundland has not released an official list of all closed locations, but a number of additional closures are planned for early 2026.
Poundland is not alone in reducing its high street presence. Other retailers such as River Island and New Look have also announced significant store closures in recent months, reflecting broader challenges in the UK retail sector.
