M&S Sparks Loyalty Scheme Relaunches with Real Money Rewards and Digital Wallet
M&S Sparks Relaunches with Real Money Rewards and Digital Wallet

Reward programmes vary widely in quality, with some standing out as exceptional, like the Boots Advantage Card, while others fall short, offering little value to justify carrying yet another card. Historically, Marks & Spencer's Sparks scheme has often been viewed as underwhelming, leaving many customers questioning what benefits they actually receive from scanning their Sparks card at checkout.

A Revamped Loyalty Experience

However, M&S has now relaunched the Sparks programme, promising a more personalised and rewarding experience. The retailer describes it as 'a personalised Sparks experience designed around each customer' with 'real money rewards.' At the core of this transformation is a new digital Sparks wallet, accessible through the M&S app on smartphones, where customers can accumulate rewards to spend across any department, from food to fashion.

How the New Scheme Works

Upon exploring the updated Sparks app, users might find offers such as earning a £6 reward for spending £30 on women's bags or a £1 reward for spending £8 on fresh berries. Once earned, these rewards can be used flexibly on anything from weekly groceries to new clothing items. M&S also highlights 'buy and bundle' promotions, where purchasing selected items together, like a bra and knickers, could net a £5 reward deposited directly into the digital wallet.

This flexibility allows customers to earn money towards their food shop even when buying dresses, enhancing the scheme's appeal. Additionally, M&S has announced its first Sparks partner, Virgin Red, Virgin's rewards club, providing another avenue to boost the Sparks wallet. For instance, booking a Virgin Atlantic holiday could earn up to £130 in rewards, while spending on Virgin Experience Days might yield £4 for every £20 spent.

Retained Perks and Customer Feedback

Some benefits from the previous Sparks card remain, including free birthday treats, coffee stamps, and charity donations, with £20 million donated to charities to date. Sharry Cramond, Marketing Director of Fashion, Home & Beauty and Loyalty at M&S, expressed enthusiasm about the relaunch, stating, 'We are so excited to finally unveil the new Sparks - it's a complete step change in how we reward our customers.'

She added, 'We've built this around exactly what they told us they want: simple, personalised offers and real money rewards that drop straight into their very own digital Sparks Wallet to spend at M&S however, whenever and on whatever they choose.' Existing Sparks members will be automatically transitioned to the new scheme, while new customers can join online. Cramond emphasised, 'Sparks now puts our customers totally in control, rewarding them for buying the products they already love and giving them the opportunity to try new things and get rewarded for it.'
