A recent review of mattress toppers has found that budget-friendly options can compete with premium brands. The Snuggledown extra deep topper, available at Lidl, was highlighted as a surprising hit for those seeking cushioning without a high price tag.
The review, conducted by a sleep expert, tested various toppers including memory foam, wool, feather and down, and synthetic models. Each was trialled for at least a month to assess comfort, breathability, support and durability. The Snuggledown topper, with a depth of 10cm, offered pressure-relieving comfort and an extra layer of softness, comparable to hotel-quality bedding.
For those willing to invest more, the Simba hybrid topper was named the best overall. It combines memory foam and pocketed micro springs for a medium-firm feel, providing pressure relief and spinal support. The topper also features open-cell foam for breathability, keeping sleepers cool. However, it comes with a noticeable off-gassing smell that lingers for a day or two.
Tristine Hargreaves, executive director of Bed Advice UK, advises that a mattress topper should be at least 5cm deep and fit snugly to avoid sliding. She notes that while a topper can change the feel of a mattress, it is not a fix for a mattress that is past its prime.
