Lidl Slashes Ice Cream Prices by 50% as Vanilla Taste Test Reveals Best Buys

Lidl has cut the price of its ice cream by 50% in a new promotion, just as a blind taste test of 11 vanilla ice creams names the discounter's £2.45 tub as a top contender. The supermarket's move comes amid rising demand for affordable frozen treats during the summer heatwave.

In a comprehensive review, food writer and former ice cream parlour worker tested a range of supermarket vanilla ice creams, from budget to premium. The Lidl offering was praised for its creamy texture and authentic vanilla flavour, outperforming more expensive brands like Carte D'Or. The tester noted that Lidl's ice cream uses Madagascan vanilla extract and powder, with visible black specks throughout.

The review highlighted that premium own-brand ranges from major supermarkets have improved significantly, with many now using a custard base of milk, cream, egg yolk and sugar. However, cheaper ice creams often contain emulsifiers and stabilisers, which can create a spongy texture. The best performers combined quality ingredients with reasonable prices.

Among the top-rated ice creams was Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Vanilla, made with West Country double cream and Madagascan vanilla, priced at around £3.50. Brickell's Vanilla Bean, at £7.50, was named the favourite overall but is only available in select local shops. Yeo Valley Organic Vanilla also scored highly for its rich custard base and real vanilla flavour.

Lidl's price cut applies to its entire ice cream range, including the award-winning vanilla tub. The promotion is expected to run while stocks last, with the supermarket urging customers to 'chill out' with savings of up to 50%.
