John Lewis has unveiled plans for a major transformation of its Glasgow store at Buchanan Galleries, with work set to commence next week. The department store chain announced on Wednesday, June 17, that it will invest £20 million into the comprehensive overhaul, which is expected to take a full year to complete.
A New Retail Destination
The revamped store will feature new brands, experiences, and services, aiming to become an "exciting retail destination full of discovery." Originally opened in 1999, the Glasgow flagship is one of only two John Lewis stores remaining in Scotland, the other located in Edinburgh's St James Quarter.
The refurbishment, covering all 28,000 square feet across five floors, is being described by John Lewis as its biggest store investment in five years. The project will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption.
Phased Renovation Schedule
The ground floor will be the first area to undergo transformation, featuring a new 'World of Tech' and sports department, expected to be completed by late September. Following that, the menswear and home departments will be enhanced, finishing by mid-November. A new Gift Emporium and womenswear section are slated to open by March 2027, with a beauty and fragrance hall completing the project by late spring 2027.
Customers can continue shopping as usual throughout the renovation, with new sections opening as they are completed.
Responding to Consumer Trends
The upgrades are designed to improve the customer experience and meet changing consumer expectations, particularly the growing demand for inspiration, partner expertise, and a seamless cross-channel experience. This investment is part of John Lewis's broader £800 million transformation plan, which aims to reshape physical stores with new brands, experiences, and services to create a "multi-sensory" shopping experience.
Recently, the Glasgow store began stocking concessions from US homeware giants Pottery Barn and West Elm, as well as a Topshop pop-up, marking the return of the popular fashion brand that disappeared in 2021.
Positive Reactions from Stakeholders
David Sharp, Head of Branch for John Lewis Glasgow, said: "This is the most exciting news for our store, for Buchanan Galleries, and for the future of retail in Glasgow. Our multi-million pound investment is about more than just a refurbishment; it’s about creating an amazing and inspirational shopping destination for Glasgow which will set a new standard for retail in Scotland. We’re excited to have work start next week, and we will continue trading throughout the refurbishment."
Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director for Buchanan Galleries, commented: "We welcome John Lewis’s £20m investment in its store in Glasgow, a powerful vote of confidence in the city. It complements our own plans for Buchanan Galleries, where we are investing to enhance the retail and leisure offer, create new experiences, and support Glasgow’s continued growth as a leading UK destination."
Tom Arthur, Minister for Business and Fair Work, added: "This major refurbishment plan is exciting news for John Lewis customers as well as being a welcome statement of intent that will support and enhance Glasgow city centre’s reputation as a shopping destination. I look forward to this being a catalyst to help drive further footfall and investment across the city centre."
Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said: "This is brilliant news for Glasgow and for our standing as one of the UK’s best performing retail destinations. John Lewis has been one of the city centre’s key shopping attractions for almost 30 years and this huge vote of confidence in Glasgow’s retail sector will, I’m sure, guarantee it continues to be for at least another 30."
