Gwyneth Paltrow's new advertisement promoting a luxury real estate development in Israel has sparked widespread outrage, with critics labeling it as sickening and completely tone-deaf.
Controversial Advertisement
In the advert, which has been circulating on social media, Paltrow is seen waking up, going for a run in Central Park, and then heading to a building called '51 Park.' When her driver asks if the destination is in New York, she replies with a smile: 'No, Herzliya, Israel.' The ad then showcases 3D renderings of the real estate project.
The project, named 51Park, is located in Herzliya, a coastal city in Israel. Critics point out that the site was historically the Palestinian village of al-Haram, whose residents were displaced during the 1948 war. The development is being built on land that many consider stolen from Palestinians.
Backlash Intensifies
The timing of the advertisement has been criticized as particularly insensitive, given that Gaza has been enduring attacks in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, which has escalated over the past three years. Social media users have expressed shock and disgust, with some referring to Paltrow as 'Gwynocide Paltrow.'
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: 'Rich people being so greedy even when they can already get everything they want, but they want more so they're willing to sell their soul for it.'
Paltrow's History of Controversy
This is not the first time Paltrow has faced backlash. Her wellness brand Goop has been criticized for promoting pseudoscientific products and advice. In 2020, NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens slammed her Netflix show for spreading misinformation about alternative therapies, calling some of the procedures 'dodgy.'
Despite her wealth and fame, Paltrow continues to engage in ventures that many find questionable. She has acted as an angel investor for startups and appeared on Shark Tank, negotiating a $400,000 deal with a breastmilk logistics startup.
Public Reaction
The advertisement has sparked a poll asking whether Paltrow's promotion of the real estate project is inappropriate given the context. Many respondents have condemned the move, arguing that promoting luxury housing in a warzone is morally wrong.
Paltrow has not shared the advert herself or commented on the backlash, leading some to believe she is aware of the controversy but chooses to remain silent.
