Co-op Slashes Prices on 50 Essential Items in Major Cost of Living Move
Co-op cuts prices on 50 essential grocery items

In a significant move to support households grappling with rising costs, the Co-op has announced sweeping price reductions across 50 essential grocery items. The supermarket chain is taking direct action to ease financial pressures on British families.

What's Included in the Price Cuts?

The extensive price reduction programme covers everyday necessities that form the backbone of family shopping baskets. Key items receiving permanent price reductions include:

  • Co-op British semi-skimmed milk (2 pints) - now £1.25
  • Co-op white medium sliced bread (800g) - reduced to 85p
  • Co-op 12 free range eggs - now £1.85
  • Co-op British chicken breast fillets (300g) - reduced to £3.50
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables including bananas, onions and tomatoes

Strategic Response to Economic Pressures

This initiative represents one of the Co-op's most substantial interventions to date in addressing the cost of living crisis. The retailer has committed to maintaining these lower prices permanently, providing long-term relief rather than temporary promotions.

Matt Hood, Co-Managing Director of Co-op Food, emphasised: "We're taking action to make sure customers have access to affordable, healthy food every day. We know people are struggling with rising costs, so we're cutting prices on products they buy regularly."

Broader Support Measures

Beyond the price reductions, the Co-op continues to operate its Member Pricing scheme, offering additional discounts to its 5 million active members. The retailer has also maintained its commitment to member rewards, with 5p for every £1 spent going back to members and their local communities.

The supermarket has invested significantly in price reductions throughout 2024, with this latest round bringing their total investment in lowering prices to over £70 million. This sustained approach demonstrates the Co-op's ongoing commitment to supporting communities during challenging economic times.

With inflation gradually easing but household budgets remaining tight, this move positions Co-op as a competitive choice for value-conscious shoppers seeking quality essentials at more accessible prices.
