Beauty Bay Faces Administration as Website Goes Offline
Online cosmetics retailer Beauty Bay is on the brink of collapse after filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators. This legal move signals that the company is preparing to enter administration, providing a temporary ten-day freeze that prevents creditors from taking legal action.
Website Shutdown and Business Review
The notice was filed on Tuesday this week, according to reports from Sky News. In response, Beauty Bay has taken its website down, displaying a message that reads: "We'll Be Back Soon. BEAUTY BAY is offline right now, we'll be back shortly." This development follows earlier reports that the company was exploring options to raise new funding, which could include an outright sale of the business.
Advisory firm Interpath has been working with Beauty Bay to conduct a review of its operations. The retailer, which employs 65 people, was founded in 1999 by brothers Arron and David Gabbie and is based in Manchester. It sells over 200 brands on its platform, including popular names like Ariana Grande, Clinique, and MAC, alongside its own range of products.
Context of Retail Collapses
This news comes amid a challenging period for the retail sector. Recently, fashion retailer Quiz collapsed into administration, resulting in 109 job losses. The redundancies affected its head office in Glasgow and warehouse in Lanarkshire. Quiz has taken its website offline and is cancelling undelivered online orders.
For customers affected by Quiz's collapse:
- Refunds are not being issued directly; instead, customers are advised to contact their bank or credit card provider.
- Purchases over £100 on credit cards may be covered under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
- Debit card payments or credit card purchases under £100 may be eligible for Chargeback if made within the last 120 days.
- Unwanted products can be exchanged in-store for items of equal value.
Quiz stores remain open with stock clearances, but gift cards are no longer accepted. It's important to note that Quiz concessions in New Look and Matalan stores are not part of the administration process.
Implications for Beauty Bay
The potential administration of Beauty Bay highlights ongoing pressures in the retail industry, particularly for online-focused businesses. As the company navigates this critical period, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments regarding its future viability and any potential rescue deals.
