Asda has been named the cheapest UK supermarket for a large shop in February 2025, according to consumer group Which?. The retailer beat Tesco with a Clubcard by £3, with a basket of 206 items costing £512.30 compared to Tesco's £515.30. The result follows Asda's reintroduction of its Rollback scheme, which has seen prices on over 4,000 products reduced by an average of 25%.
For smaller shops, Aldi remained the cheapest, with a list of 100 items costing £182.64 on average last month. Rival discounter Lidl was close behind, costing £184.51 with its loyalty scheme Lidl Plus and £184.94 without. Tesco Clubcard members would have paid £205.31 for the same basket, while non-members paid £212.54.
Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket for both basket sizes, with a large shop costing £585.10 and a small shop £245.79. Which? Retail Editor Reena Sewraz said: 'Our latest monthly analysis once again sees Aldi crowned as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, however, Lidl remains close behind its rival. It was also a good month for Asda, as it held on to the top spot as the cheapest supermarket for a bigger list of groceries.'
Which? noted that Aldi and Lidl were not included in the large basket comparison due to their smaller range of branded products. The analysis included both branded and own-brand items such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Sewraz added that switching supermarkets could save consumers up to 26%, highlighting the benefits of shopping around.
