Discount retailer Aldi has released a tongue-in-cheek parody of luxury fragrance adverts, as new research shows two in five Brits would refuse a second date over a partner's bad perfume choice.
Fragrance blunders affect romance
A study of 2,000 UK adults revealed that 40% would contemplate turning down a second date due to someone's perfume or aftershave. For some, offensive scents represent an even more serious relationship deal-breaker, with nearly one in ten (9%) confessing they have terminated a relationship because of their partner's perfume.
The country's most significant fragrance 'ick' is dousing oneself in too much perfume or aftershave (37%), followed closely by someone reeking 'like an air freshener' (37%) and relying on deodorant instead of washing after exercise (36%).
TikTok fragrance crazes are also causing controversy, with 19% of Brits citing 'TikTok made me buy it' amongst their most concerning fragrance warning signs. Social media continues to influence fragrance purchasing patterns, with 21% uncovering perfumes and aftershaves online and 19% confessing they have purchased a scent due to content they've encountered on social platforms.
Shift towards budget-friendly options
Despite firm views on fragrance blunders, Brits are increasingly shifting away from costly designer scents towards budget-friendly options. Research revealed two thirds of Brits (67%) consider cheaper perfumes and aftershaves superior to luxury originals, while more than half (57%) claim they've garnered more praise wearing budget fragrances than designer scents. Fragrance advertisements also continue to wield considerable power, with nearly a third of Britons (32%) admitting they've purchased a scent after viewing an advert without even sampling it firsthand.
Aldi has unveiled the 'Aldi Fragrance Advert' to mock over-the-top luxury fragrance commercials. A brief advertisement drawing inspiration from classic designer fragrance adverts, set in a typical Aldi environment, starring easily-distracted shop assistant 'Dave', highlights the latest Lacura collection.
Aldi's Julie Ashfield said: 'It's official, we're a nation of fragrance fans. Our new research shows shoppers are becoming savvier and are increasingly turning to affordable options that still deliver on quality and scent. That's why we're excited to launch our latest range of fragrances, offering customers luxury without the premium price tag.'
New Lacura fragrances
As consumers persist in seeking premium fragrances minus the hefty cost, Aldi is introducing three new limited-edition Lacura men's scents. The new Lacura Solar Drift, Lacura Classic Edge and Lacura Urban Dusk Eau de Parfum (50ml) arrive in shops nationwide from 11th June for just £5.99 each. Customers making purchases can save up to 92% compared to high-end brands such as Dior, Ralph Lauren, and Hugo Boss.
