Aldi Chocolate Bar Hailed As Better Than Reeses By Aussies

A recent taste test of supermarket chocolates by Australian experts has left them 'speechless' over the quality of Aldi's offerings. The test, conducted by Sydney-based chocolatiers Alice Tieu and Jin Sun Kim, along with journalist Tristan Lutze and his partner Caroline, evaluated nine brands of gift-worthy chocolates for Valentine's Day.

The Aldi Merci milk and dark chocolate mix, priced at $4.99 for 200g, stunned the panel with its rich taste and balanced sweetness. Despite its simple cardboard packaging, the chocolates were praised for their intense flavour, good snap, and texture. Caroline noted that only the packaging held them back from top marks.

Ferrero Rocher took the top spot overall, with its crisp shell, truffle filling, and whole hazelnut centre earning high scores. However, the Aldi chocolates were deemed exceptional value at just 25 cents per piece, leaving the experts momentarily speechless at the quality-to-price ratio.

The test also highlighted Ferrero Raffaello, which impressed with its coconut and almond flavours, though the desiccated coconut left a lingering presence. The panel agreed that price is not always a marker of quality, with Aldi proving that affordable chocolates can rival premium brands.
