Home Renovator Discovers 40-Year-Old Packet of Crisps Behind Kitchen Unit
40-Year-Old Crisps Found During Kitchen Renovation

A homeowner renovating his kitchen has stumbled upon a remarkable retro discovery dating back more than 40 years. Donnie Maclean shared a photo on X, formerly Twitter, of a sealed packet of Golden Wonder crispy bacon flavour crisps that he found while pulling a kitchen unit away from the wall in his new home.

The Discovery

Donnie Maclean posted images of both the front and back of the packet, showing a 25g red bag with the Golden Wonder logo and the words 'potato crisps' above a transparent window revealing the unbroken crisps inside. The packet also featured the text 'crispy bacon flavour' and a list of ingredients on the reverse side.

On the back, alongside a transparent section, there was a message encouraging customers to try the new prawn cocktail flavour and a 'please keep your country tidy' note. A series of numbers printed on the reverse suggested the crisps were manufactured in 1986.

Social Media Reaction

Donnie wrote on X: 'Hey @GoldenWonderUK. I'm renovating the house I bought recently. I just pulled a kitchen unit away from the wall and found these beauties! I'm estimating late 1970s. What do you reckon?!'

Another X user posted a picture of packets from 1980 to 1996, noting that Donnie's find matched the 1983 packet. They added: '1983 give or take a couple of years I'd guess.'

Other users were amazed by the discovery. One commented: '100 per cent you open them a genie will come out! Whether they grant you three wishes or bring about the end of civilisation as we know it is another thing.' Another wrote: 'reckon the bacon flavour is so concentrated here that these are perhaps the most baconiest things in the world. Pure unadulterated bacon. Even more than a Frazzle, or a Bacon Fry.'

Many noted that the packet was completely intact and full, with one user remarking: 'Wow. Remember when they weren't selling bags of air with a couple crisps in the bottom.' Another added: 'Wow an actual FULL packet of crisps, don't see that these days. Now they are 70 per cent air.'

History of Golden Wonder

Golden Wonder has been a staple of the British snack industry for nearly 80 years. Established in Stockbridge, near Edinburgh, in 1947, the brand previously manufactured Wotsits, now owned by Walkers, alongside Wheat Crunchies and Nik Naks, now produced by KP. In 2006, the company fell into administration before being acquired by Northern Irish crisp maker Tayto.
