The DVLA has issued an urgent car tax message to motorists across the UK, urging them to act promptly. Officials at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency have reminded road users to pay their Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) car tax bill as soon as possible if it is due for renewal.
Understanding VED and Its Importance
VED can catch drivers off guard, as they are required to renew their road tax every year to legally keep their cars on the road. The annual bill varies depending on factors such as a vehicle's emissions, with less clean models paying significantly more.
The DVLA has now issued a warning to road users, reminding them of what needs to happen to avoid breaking the rules. It stated: “Remember to pay your vehicle tax before it runs out. Do it online at: gov.uk/dvla/tax.”
How to Renew Your Car Tax
Motorists can renew their road tax online in just a matter of minutes, but alternative methods are also available. Road users can renew their tax by calling the DVLA vehicle tax service or by visiting the Post Office in person.
Those with a Direct Debit need not take any action, as vehicle tax will renew automatically when it is due to expire. Motorists used to be required to display a physical tax disc on their windscreen, but the DVLA removed this requirement back in 2014.
Digital Tracking and Enforcement
Vehicle tax is now tracked entirely on a digital database. Law enforcement uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to check if a vehicle is correctly taxed.
AutoTrader explained: “You can use DVLA’s free vehicle enquiry service to find out when your car’s tax runs out. DVLA also sends out tax reminder letters known as the V11 form right before your tax is due, although it is not the DVLA’s responsibility to remind you. DVLA are also encouraging drivers to use their digital services to get reminders when their car tax renewal is due.”
Failure to pay VED can result in fines and penalties, making it essential for drivers to stay on top of their tax obligations.
