Gordon Ramsay Acquires Second Cornwall Property Amidst Public Backlash
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has reportedly expanded his property portfolio in Cornwall with the purchase of a new home, a move that comes in the wake of controversial remarks he made about Cornish people. The 59-year-old television personality and his wife, Tana Ramsay, acquired the property through their newly established company, Rocky Bay Estates.
Property Details and Location
The newly purchased house features four bedrooms and sits on a two-acre plot. It is located just a short distance from the Ramsays' existing beachside residence in Rock, Cornwall, which they bought for £4.4 million in 2015. That property underwent extensive renovations and served as a lockdown retreat for the family during the pandemic in 2020.
However, their use of the Rock home during lockdown sparked complaints from neighbours. Locals outside urban areas expressed frustration, arguing that second-home owners like Ramsay contributed to the spread of the virus by relocating from cities to rural or coastal areas.
Controversial Comments on Cornish People
Ramsay's latest property investment follows a radio interview where he made divisive statements about Cornwall and its residents. While promoting his Netflix documentary series, Being Gordon Ramsay, on Scott Mills' show, he praised the region, saying, "I absolutely adore Cornwall, honestly, from the surfing, the swimming."
Yet, in a separate conversation with Vernon Kay on BBC Radio 2, Ramsay revealed a contrasting view. He remarked, "I would go down to the beautiful Cornish coast and get a little line-caught seabass and do that with a little light crushed potatoes. Trust me, I absolutely love Cornwall, it’s just the Cornish I can't stand."
Netflix Documentary and Personal Controversies
The Netflix docu-series, which aired earlier this month, offers viewers a glimpse into Ramsay's life beyond his restaurants, portraying a calmer, family-oriented side of the chef known for his fiery kitchen outbursts. However, not everyone is convinced by this depiction.
Sarah Symonds, who alleges she had a seven-year affair with Ramsay starting in 2001—a claim he has consistently denied—recently criticised the series. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she called it "fake" and described his relationship with Tana as a "sham." Symonds fumed, "The title of the docu-series 'Being Gordon Ramsay' is totally fake - just like him. It's misleading and disingenuous. A travesty in fact, as nothing about it was 'Being Gordon' at all." She argued the show presents a "glossed over" version of the star.
This property purchase and the surrounding controversies highlight the ongoing tensions between celebrity second-home ownership and local communities in Cornwall, while also shedding light on Ramsay's complex public persona.
