As the World Cup 2026 kicks off, football fans across the UK are heading to pubs to support their teams. However, legal experts are warning that enthusiastic celebrations, such as throwing drinks into the air, could result in fines of up to £5,000 or even prison sentences.
Potential Penalties for Overzealous Celebrations
Depending on the circumstances, fans who throw beer mugs, pint glasses, or other objects during celebrations may face assault charges if someone is struck or injured. Under English law, an assault is defined as any act by which a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to suffer or apprehend immediate unlawful violence. Even if no one is injured, throwing objects can be considered a public order offence if it causes disorderly behaviour or poses a risk to public safety.
Penalties range from fines of up to £5,000 to prison sentences of between six months and five years, depending on the severity of the incident. Experts emphasise that the type of container—glass or plastic—does not matter; if actions endanger others, police can take action.
Social Media Reactions
The issue has sparked debate online. One fan questioned why people throw their drinks, with another calling it 'being a t***.' Another user explained that throwing drinks is often uncoordinated and happens spontaneously when a goal is scored, particularly in outdoor settings with plastic cups. However, this behaviour is less common inside pubs with glassware.
Authorities urge fans to celebrate responsibly and be mindful of others to avoid ruining the match experience.
