Their research highlighted three standout locations, with Muncie leading the pack due to its cost of living, which sits approximately 12 to 14 percent below the national average. This substantial saving makes it a remarkably economical choice for retirees.
Senior Economist Kara Ng informed the Daily Mail that residing in Muncie would render the specified budget "not only workable, but potentially quite comfortable." Housing costs are particularly noteworthy, with median home prices beginning at just $147,303. Ng further noted, "Homes in Muncie are also moving at a slightly slower pace. That gives buyers more time to make decisions and can reduce the competitive pressure often seen in larger, more expensive markets."
Lifestyle and Cultural Heritage
Retirees in Muncie benefit from access to 27 municipal parks, ideal for leisurely strolls. The presence of Ball State University ensures a dynamic mix of residents across all age groups, while the Ball Corporation provides a touch of local industry. The town boasts an unexpected yet rich cultural legacy.
Muncie is the celebrated hometown of the Garfield comic strip. Its creator, Jim Davis, graduated from Ball State University in 1967 and maintained Garfield's headquarters and studio in Delaware County for many decades. Furthermore, the beloved television painter Bob Ross filmed his acclaimed series The Joy of Painting at the public broadcast studio Ball State PBS, formerly WIPB, from 1983 until the show concluded in 1994.

Harrell recommends keeping two critical factors in mind: planning for unexpected events, such as health issues or the loss of a spouse, and not assuming circumstances will remain static. He emphasized that every community presents its own challenges.
"Some of the most expensive, fanciest suburbs have a whole lot of social isolation, or they don't have a lot of housing choices – there are trade-offs everywhere," Harrell stated. "So Muncie has trade-offs. Every other community has trade-offs as well. So I want you to consider those and think about what might happen in the future. Do you have the options in place to help you?"

Lorain, Ohio, positioned at the mouth of the Black River on the shores of Lake Erie, presents another compelling option, especially with a median home price of $145,771. Once renowned for steel manufacturing in the 1890s, it is now known as 'The International City' due to its diverse immigrant population representing over 55 nationalities.
