An M&S food expert has revealed a simple storage trick that can keep bread fresh for up to three months, helping to reduce food waste and save money.
The Problem with Bread Storage
Bread is a kitchen essential, but it is one of the most wasted foods in the UK. Many loaves turn mouldy before they can be eaten because people are unaware of how to store them correctly. Bread is particularly prone to spoiling during summer, as warmer temperatures accelerate mould growth. While bread bins are popular, they can become excessively humid in warmer months, creating the perfect environment for mould to thrive.
The M&S Solution
Heather Taylor from Marks and Spencer Food has shared a far simpler method: using clingfilm. She said: "Bread is one of the most-wasted ingredients and freezes brilliantly. Try halving your sourdough loaf then wrapping one in cling film then freezing." Many households hesitate to freeze bread, fearing it will lose taste or turn soggy. However, wrapping bread firmly in clingfilm forms an airtight seal that minimises moisture loss and restricts air exposure, maintaining texture and freshness for longer.
How to Freeze and Defrost Bread Using the M&S Method
- Freeze bread immediately after purchasing for best results.
- Slice the bread before freezing to easily remove only what you need.
- Wrap securely in clingfilm, removing as much air as possible. For longer storage, double-wrap.
- To defrost, leave wrapped at room temperature for several hours to prevent drying out.
- For toast, place slices directly into the toaster from frozen.
Bread can remain fresh for up to three months in the freezer, making it a practical method to reduce food waste and spending.
