Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been informed that he will be working with a restricted budget this summer, forcing him to make critical decisions on which positions to prioritize in the coming weeks.
Financial Constraints and SCR Compliance
As Newcastle faces a potential UEFA fine, club executives have cautioned Howe and his recruitment team about the necessity of adhering to SCR (Squad Cost Ratio) rules. Following the Magpies' acquisition of Ewen Jaouen for an initial fee of £18.5 million, Howe's second summer signing is highly anticipated. However, sources at Chronicle Live understand that the head coach has been instructed to avoid pursuing high-earning players.
With the highest earners at St James' Park receiving approximately £150,000 per week, Newcastle is not expected to raise its wage ceiling this summer. It is also unlikely that Howe will have the opportunity to surpass the club's record transfer fee of £69 million, paid for Nick Woltemade last year.
Spending Cutbacks
Last summer, Newcastle spent around £240 million, but this year Howe is working with a much more modest budget. The club is concerned that transfer valuations have dropped significantly for players like Yoane Wissa, who cost £55 million—a fee Newcastle would struggle to recoup if they decided to sell him.
This situation could change if Newcastle offloads key players such as Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, or Lewis Hall. However, as things stand, Howe faces a battle to retain his star names while working his magic in the transfer window.
Targets and Departures
Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović, who is soon to be out of contract, has been proposed to Newcastle in the last fortnight. However, his wage demands exceeding £200,000 per week, along with a substantial signing-on fee for the player and his agent, would make it an expensive deal. Similarly, Marcus Rashford is available for £26 million but also demands high wages, and club sources have distanced Newcastle from that move.
One clear priority is the signing of a new senior goalkeeper, with Nick Pope's agency currently exploring potential opportunities for the England international this summer. Additionally, Anthony Gordon is expected to be replaced, with Newcastle still in talks with Osasuna regarding Victor Munoz after expressing interest to the La Liga club.
Other Positions Under Consideration
Incoming deals at right-back, central midfield, and on the right-hand side of Howe's attack are also being considered, with departures in other areas not ruled out. Newcastle is open to selling players like Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, and Joe Willock, all of whom are seen as potential assets to raise funds.
The coming weeks promise to be intriguing for Newcastle, with the transfer window not yet open and plenty of behind-the-scenes work on player trading already underway.
