A new study has identified the nation's biggest fragrance 'icks', with wearing too much perfume or aftershave, smelling 'like an air freshener', and using deodorant instead of showering after exercise topping the list.
Top Fragrance Turn-Offs
According to research commissioned by Aldi, dousing yourself in fragrance and smelling like an air freshener both topped the list at 37% each. Close behind was using deodorant instead of showering after exercise, cited by 36% of respondents. These poor fragrance habits could be impacting love lives, as two-fifths (40%) of Brits said they would consider turning down a second date because of someone's perfume or aftershave. For some, unpleasant scents are a major relationship dealbreaker, with nearly one in ten (9%) admitting they have ended a relationship over their partner's fragrance choice.
Social Media Influence
Of the 2,000 Brits surveyed, 19% said people wearing 'TikTok made me buy it' scents ranked among their biggest fragrance red flags. Social media continues to shape fragrance shopping habits, with 21% discovering new scents online and 19% admitting they have purchased a fragrance based on social media content. Despite having strong opinions on fragrance faux pas, Brits are increasingly turning away from expensive designer scents in favour of budget-friendly alternatives.
Cheaper Fragrances Win Approval
The research revealed that two-thirds of Brits (67%) believe cheaper perfumes and aftershaves smell better than their luxury counterparts. More than half (57%) said they have received more compliments when wearing affordable fragrances than designer ones. Fragrance adverts still hold considerable sway, with a third of Brits (32%) admitting they have purchased a fragrance after seeing an advert without even smelling it first.
Aldi's Tongue-in-Cheek Advert
Aldi has released the 'Aldi Fragrance Advert', a humorous take on over-the-top luxury fragrance commercials. The short ad, inspired by classic designer fragrance adverts but set in a typical Aldi store, features an easily distracted shop worker named 'Dave' and showcases the retailer's latest Lacura range. Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, commented: 'It's official, we're a nation of fragrance fans. Our research shows shoppers are becoming savvier and increasingly are turning to affordable options that still deliver on quality and scent. That's why we are excited to launch our latest range of fragrances, offering customers luxury without the premium price tag.'
New Fragrance Range
As more shoppers seek high-end fragrances without the hefty price tag, Aldi is rolling out three new limited-edition Lacura men's scents: Lacura Solar Drift, Lacura Classic Edge, and Lacura Urban Dusk Eau de Parfum. Launching in stores nationwide from June 11 for £4.99, shoppers could save up to 92% compared to premium brands such as Dior, Ralph Lauren, and Hugo Boss.
