A popular children's creative kit has been pulled from shelves in an urgent product recall after dangerous asbestos fibres were discovered within its coloured sand.
Immediate Health Risk Identified
The MIKI Sand Art Set, commonly sold in pharmacies nationwide, was officially recalled on Monday following disturbing laboratory results. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) confirmed that initial testing detected unidentified mineral fibres consistent with tremolite asbestos.
"The products may cause a risk to health as initial testing found unidentified mineral fibres that were consistent with tremolite – type asbestos," the ACCC recall notice stated. This type of asbestos is considered particularly hazardous when inhaled.
Affected Products and Timeframe
The recalled art set, distributed by Sax International, contains 12 coloured sands, 12 card designs, one tray and a shaping tool. Consumers are being warned that any sets purchased between July 24, 2023 and November 20, 2025 could be contaminated.
This extensive timeframe means thousands of products may already be in family homes across the country, posing a potential health hazard to children during creative play.
What Parents Need to Do
Health authorities are urging immediate action from anyone who has purchased the MIKI Sand Art Set. Stop using the product immediately and keep it away from children. Return the complete set to the place of purchase for a full refund.
This incident highlights the critical importance of rigorous product safety testing, particularly for items designed specifically for children's use. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
