Christmas dinner costs are expected to rise slightly this year, with households spending an average of £174 on festive food and drink. Research by coupon expert Jordon Cox and mySupermarket.co.uk reveals that while some items have seen price drops, overall costs for traditional Christmas fare have increased by 10p per plate compared to last year.
Among the most popular products, Bisto's Best and Rich Gravy and Paxo Sage, Onion and Apple Stuffing are highlighted as items where shoppers can save money by switching to supermarket own brands. Swapping Bisto for a store-brand gravy could save £1.17 on whole products, according to the study.
In a taste test, Aldi's own champagne, Veuve Monsigny French Champagne Brut by Philizot, outperformed Heidsieck Monnopole Gold Top, as rated by Good Housekeeping. At just £1.33 per 100ml, it offers significant savings compared to premium brands like Piper Heidsieck Brut Non-Vintage, which saw an average price drop of 48p per 100ml.
Asda emerged as the cheapest supermarket for Christmas groceries, reducing costs by £2.06 per 100g serving compared to last year. The research analysed 10 family favourites, including turkey, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and Christmas pudding, finding minimal price changes for most items.
