Foster's Lager Reduces Alcohol Content from February 2025
Foster's Lager lowers ABV from February

Popular Lager Sees Key Change

A significant change is coming to a staple of British pubs, as Heineken UK announces it will lower the alcohol content of Foster's lager. This alteration to the well-known brew is scheduled to take effect from February 2025.

Why the ABV is Being Lowered

The alcohol by volume (ABV) of Foster's is being reduced from its current level of 3.7%. This strategic move serves a dual purpose. Primarily, it allows Heineken to benefit from substantial duty savings offered by the UK government on lower-strength beers.

Currently, the alcohol duty rate jumps significantly for drinks with an ABV above 3.4%. Products between 1.3% and 3.4% ABV are charged £9.61 per litre of alcohol, while those from 3.5% to 8.4% ABV are charged at the higher rate of £21.01 per litre.

Furthermore, the decision is a direct response to a growing consumer trend. A Heineken UK spokesperson confirmed the change is also designed to appeal to the increasing number of drinkers who are actively choosing lower-alcohol alternatives for health reasons.

Commitment to Taste and Responsibility

Heineken UK has moved to reassure loyal Foster's drinkers that the iconic taste will remain. The company stated that its master brewers have spent many months refining the recipe to ensure the new version is still "crisp, balanced and refreshing."

The spokesperson emphasised, "The decision to adjust the ABV of Foster's reflects our commitment to helping consumers make responsible choices, while supporting pubs and retailers with a competitively priced classic lager."

They also confirmed that the new-look Foster's has undergone extensive consumer testing and "delivers the same great taste and experience" that people expect from the brand.

This is not the first time Heineken has taken such a step this year; the company also reduced the ABV of its Mexican beer brand Sol to 3.4% earlier in 2025.
