Major Safety Alert Issued for Popular Fizz
Shoppers across the Midlands are being urged to check their cupboards immediately as more than 900,000 bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco have been officially recalled. The urgent action comes after officials discovered that unopened bottles can spontaneously explode, sending dangerous shards of glass and wine flying without any warning.
Specific Details of the Recalled Product
The affected product is the Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, which was sold in a distinctive green glass bottle with purple foil. It retailed for around eight dollars and was available in a dozen Midwestern states between April and August 2025. Consumers can identify the product using barcode 196633883742 and the Costco item number 1879870.
The recall was formally issued by F&F Fine Wines International, following at least ten separate reports of bottles shattering on their own. The situation has already turned dangerous, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission confirming that one customer was injured by flying glass shards.
What Consumers Must Do Now
Costco first alerted customers to the potential danger in a September letter, advising them not to open or return the bottles to stores. With the formal recall now in effect, shoppers are being given specific safety instructions.
Do not return the bottle to a store. Instead, to prevent potential injuries from an explosion, customers should carefully wrap the unopened bottle in paper towels, place it securely inside a plastic bag, and then dispose of it in the trash.
Despite this disposal method, consumers are still entitled to a full refund. To claim it, they must present the official recall notice at any Costco location. The CPSC has also stated that consumers can contact Ethica Wines directly for further instructions on obtaining their refund through Costco.
A Pattern of Problems for Retail Giant
This prosecco alert is the latest in a concerning series of recalls from the wholesale retailer. Earlier this week, Costco recalled Dubai-style chocolate from Rolling Pin Baking Company due to a packaging error that mislabelled wheat as gluten.
Other recent safety alerts include a recall for Anker Power Bank's A1257 models after experts found their lithium-ion battery cells could explode and cause burns. Another was issued for BowFlex adjustable dumbbells following more than 100 injury reports. The retailer also sent out notices for 18-packs of Topo Chico Mineral Water after bottles were found to be contaminated with a dangerous bacteria capable of causing blood infections.
One Chicago customer shared her frightening experience with The New York Times back in September, revealing that multiple corks from the prosecco had flown out on their own. In one particularly alarming incident during a bridal shower, a cork struck a friend directly in the eye, highlighting the very real danger posed by this faulty product.
