Manchester United have officially parted ways with Jadon Sancho, releasing the winger with a terse 44-word statement. The club acknowledged his role in the 2023 Carabao Cup-winning squad and wished him well for the future, but the brief announcement underscored a disastrous chapter in United's transfer history.
A Costly Mistake
Sancho arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a staggering £73 million, making him one of the club's most expensive signings. However, his time at Old Trafford was marked by underperformance, injuries, and off-field issues. He scored just 12 goals in 83 appearances, equating to roughly £6 million per goal—a figure that does not include his £250,000-per-week wages.
The transfer is emblematic of the kind of expensive errors the INEOS regime, now overseeing the club, is determined to avoid. Sancho's failure to adapt to the Premier League's intensity and physicality was evident from the outset.
Unfulfilled Potential
Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who sanctioned the deal, had high hopes for Sancho, describing him as a "creative, positive winger" who could excite fans. But the player who thrived in the Bundesliga struggled to replicate that form in England. Solskjaer noted that an ear infection shortly after his arrival may have hampered his start, but Sancho managed only three Premier League goals in his debut season.
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick suggested the pressure of playing for a giant club like United affected Sancho mentally. "It's a different league, more physical, more pressure," Rangnick said. "In training, he shows he's one of the best players, but it's about transferring that to the pitch on weekends."
Brief Glimmers and Decline
There were fleeting moments of promise, such as a run in early 2022 when he scored against Southampton, provided assists against Leeds, and netted in consecutive matches against Manchester City and Tottenham. However, tonsillitis sidelined him, and under Erik ten Hag, he was granted time off to address "physical and mental" issues. During that period, he stepped away from social media, trained with Dutch amateur side OJC Rosmale, and missed a winter training camp.
Upon his return, he received a standing ovation from Old Trafford and helped United win the Carabao Cup. But his relationship with Ten Hag soured after he was dropped for a match against Arsenal in September 2023. Sancho publicly disputed Ten Hag's explanation on social media, leading to his banishment from first-team duties and a solitary training regime.
Loan Spells and Release
Sancho rejoined Dortmund on loan in January 2024, starting in a Champions League final. He then spent a season on loan at Chelsea and another at Aston Villa, winning the Conference League and Europa League respectively. However, he played a combined 38 minutes in those finals, far from the impact expected of a £73 million talent.
United's decision to release Sancho marks the end of a saga that saw the club invest heavily in a player who never lived up to his billing. For Sancho, the future remains uncertain, but his time at Old Trafford will be remembered as one of the club's worst ever signings.
