Liverpool Sign Victor Munoz: Iraola's Ideal New Winger

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Spain winger Victor Munoz after the Osasuna man completed a medical in Tennessee and agreed to a six-year deal. The 22-year-old will form part of Andoni Iraola's new-look forward line, with the Reds activating his £34.5m release clause on June 18.

A Surprise Swoop

Munoz's arrival is the first step in an anticipated rejuvenation of the Liverpool attack following Mohamed Salah's exit. The deal came out of the blue, reminiscent of the Michael Edwards era, and signals a return to 'Moneyball'-style recruitment after last summer's record spending failed to yield on-pitch progress.

Munoz represents a step into the unknown, having spent only one full senior season. Like reported target Yan Diomande and prospect Rio Ngumoha, he lacks extensive top-flight experience but boasts impressive youth pedigree.

Youth and Development

Munoz began at Sant Adria de Besos in Catalonia, spent three years at Barcelona's La Masia, then joined Real Madrid's youth system via CF Damm. He progressed through Madrid's C-team and Castilla, where his pace was identified as the fastest in the club.

He made his senior debut against Barcelona on May 11, 2025, replacing Vinicius Junior with Madrid trailing 3-2. He missed a crucial one-on-one chance, sparking online abuse. Carlo Ancelotti supported him, saying: "I told him he shouldn't think about what he'd missed, but rather focus on scoring the next one."

Breakout at Osasuna

Leaving Madrid for Osasuna proved brave and fruitful. Munoz scored six goals and assisted two in 34 LaLiga appearances, plus a goal and three assists in the Copa del Rey. His fast, aggressive dribbling impressed Iraola, who played a key role in identifying him as a target.

Munoz ranked in the top 5% of LaLiga wingers for shots (81), shots on target (31), duels won (167), fouls won (54), possession won in the final third (22), touches in the opposition box (143), and successful dribbles (75). The latter two stats are remarkable given Osasuna's low possession (46.8%).

International Debut and World Cup Call

His performances earned a Spain call-up for March friendlies, where he scored on debut against Serbia. He also netted three goals and one assist in five games as a centre-forward. Despite only two league assists, his expected assists (xA) of 3.24 suggests room for growth. His dribbling success rate (42.1%) is average, and he was dispossessed 56 times, the most among LaLiga wingers.

Munoz has been named in Spain's 26-man World Cup squad, meaning he will likely miss pre-season until late August, potentially after Liverpool's US tour.

Exciting Start for Liverpool

Securing Munoz represents an exciting start to Liverpool's summer, adding a new dynamic to their attack. While raw, his potential aligns with Iraola's system, and fans can look forward to his development.
