Liverpool supporters are closely monitoring the ongoing World Cup, where several current and former Reds stars are representing their countries. On Sunday, Mohamed Salah made history for Egypt by scoring in his nation's first-ever World Cup victory, a 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand. However, the sight of the forward celebrating was bittersweet for Liverpool fans, following his departure from the club this summer after nine trophy-filled years.
Egypt Coach Takes Swipe at Liverpool
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan appeared to take a veiled dig at Liverpool's alleged mismanagement of Mohamed Salah after the forward's impressive performance. Salah, 34, demonstrated he still possesses elite-level quality, playing a pivotal role in Egypt's victory. His goal leaves him just one short of Hassan's record as Egypt's all-time top scorer with 69 goals.
Salah had been embroiled in a bitter dispute with former Reds head coach Arne Slot during the Dutchman's final season at Anfield. The fallout led to two public outbursts from Salah as he struggled to replicate the numbers from the previous campaign, when he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title.
Hassan said: "Salah worked hard on the pitch and this is something you should know. I am maybe the first coach to let him play in a position that matches his danger, that matches his capabilities and qualities. We worked on so many things and I am sure we are going to see more from him."
Tearing up, he added: "I am very happy with this victory, and I thank the entire Egyptian people for their support. This victory is dedicated to all Egyptians, both men and women. I am extremely happy, and my feelings are similar to those of millions of Egyptians after this win."
Inter's Bid for Curtis Jones Rejected
Liverpool have turned down a second offer from Inter Milan for midfielder Curtis Jones, with a £21.7m bid falling considerably short of their asking price. The Reds have been in negotiations with the Serie A champions for several weeks after initially rebuffing their approach in January.
Inter's proposals for Jones remain a considerable distance from Liverpool's valuation, and the club are understood to have grown frustrated with the San Siro side's underwhelming bids. Liverpool are reportedly seeking around £35m for the midfielder, using Conor Gallagher's £35m January transfer from Atletico Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur as a benchmark.
Jones has made 228 appearances for the club he supported as a boy since his debut in January 2019, and has earned four England caps. He had previously indicated he was looking forward to the upcoming season at Anfield, yet uncertainty remains over whether he will still be a Liverpool player by the time the summer transfer window closes.
