Schools across the Western Isles of Scotland will remain closed on Tuesday as the Met Office issues two fresh yellow wind warnings for damaging gusts, travel disruption and potential power cuts.
Fresh weather warnings
Following Storm Beolo over the weekend, the Met Office has placed two yellow wind warnings for western areas of England and parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland from Monday evening into Tuesday. Another yellow warning for strong winds and potentially damaging gusts is in place from 3am on Tuesday until midnight for most of Scotland and the far north-east of Northern Ireland.
The forecaster said the strong winds are likely to cause travel disruption and power cuts, making it difficult for students to attend school.
Western Isles closures
The Council of the Western Isles (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) announced on Monday that all schools in the Western Isles will be closed to pupils on Tuesday, October 27, due to high winds forecast at the time of the school commute.
The council said: "The decision to close schools has been taken to prioritise pupil safety, considering the timing of the highest forecast wind speed and potential coastal flooding from high tide levels."
Other affected schools
Other schools in Scotland have said pupils will be accommodated, with further updates expected this morning. A lack of power caused more than a dozen primary schools in Aberdeenshire and Rothiemay Primary School in Moray to close. Some schools are also expected to open later on Tuesday, including Ballogie Nursery in Aberdeenshire.
Dunblane Primary School in Stirling was closed on Monday due to concerns about an unsafe roof, with the council saying it will provide families with an update "as soon as possible" on whether it will open on Tuesday.
