The Met Office has issued new yellow weather warnings for wind, with one posing a potential 'danger to life' as another deep area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic. This comes just days after Storm Boelo brought widespread disruption to the UK.
Warnings in force from Monday
One warning comes into effect at 6pm today and affects parts of northwest England, Northern Ireland, southwest England, southwest Scotland and west Wales. It is set to expire at 3am tomorrow morning.
A second yellow warning covers all of Scotland and northern parts of Northern Ireland from 3am until 9pm on Tuesday. The forecaster stressed that this one could present a 'danger to life'.
Potential impacts and risks
'There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties,' the Met Office said. 'There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris.'
The weather system could also cause power cuts, 'longer journey times or cancellations', road and bridge closures, and 'damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, as well as damage to trees'.
Background and aftermath of Storm Boelo
The incoming system is not expected to be as severe as Storm Boelo, which caused widespread power outages, flooding, and several deaths over the weekend. However, its effects could be amplified as it follows hot on the heels of the previous storm.
It is unclear whether the weather system will become a named storm, but the Met Office has predicted that midweek will bring calmer conditions as an area of high pressure builds close to the UK. Rain will continue into Wednesday, but most of the country is expected to be dry by the end of the day.
Storm Boelo caused multiple injuries and fatalities. Two pedestrians were rushed to hospital after being crushed by falling scaffolding on Streatham High Road, south London, on Sunday. A 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in Dumfries, Scotland, just after 10am on the same day, and another man in London was crushed in his car as he drove through Mill Hill at 12.40am.
