As someone who walks nearly every weekend, I know the importance of a good pair of boots. Blisters and aching feet can ruin a route fast. The best boots must be waterproof yet breathable, lightweight yet tough, and above all comfortable.
I tested several pairs across challenging terrain in Wales and southern England, including Dartmoor, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons and the Peak District. My top pick is the Inov-8 roclite mid GTX (£150, Amazon.co.uk). It offers a secure heel fit, roomy toe box, and excellent comfort from the start. Weighing just 425g, it feels like a running shoe but provides solid support, waterproofing and grip thanks to Gore-Tex and hoof-shaped lugs. Note: it runs slightly small, so consider half a size up.
For rugged conditions, the Berghaus mid-reach boots impressed with their chunky silhouette and beefy outsole, yet remained lightweight. Waterproofing was excellent, breathability good even with thick socks, and the toe box roomy without being too loose. The heel fit snugly prevents blisters, and the protective bumper allows confident striding.
If speed matters, the Adidas Terrex Skychaser features speedlaces that fasten in seconds. Its mid-cut version offers a secure fit quickly, making it ideal for spontaneous walks. All boots were tested for comfort, freshness on long hikes, grip, waterproofing and durability.
