Mauritius Imposes 21-Day Quarantine for Some Travellers Over Ebola Fears
Mauritius 21-Day Quarantine for Some Travellers Over Ebola

Holidaymakers planning a trip to Mauritius this summer are being warned about new travel restrictions that include a mandatory 21-day quarantine for some visitors. The popular destination has implemented stringent measures in response to fears surrounding an Ebola outbreak.

New Entry Requirements for Mauritius

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance following a statement by the Mauritian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 15. Under the new rules, non-Mauritian nationals who have travelled from, transited through, or been present in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the previous 21 days will not be permitted to enter Mauritius unless they meet specific criteria. These include holding a valid work permit, residence permit, business visa, or student visa.

Mauritian citizens and eligible foreign nationals who have visited any of the three countries within that timeframe will still be allowed to enter but must undergo a compulsory 21-day quarantine upon arrival.

Health Screening Measures

The Mauritian authorities have indicated that travellers may be subject to additional health screening measures and checks depending on their recent travel history. According to Mauritius Airport's official travel advisory, the restrictions remain in effect until further notice.

Understanding Ebola

Ebola is a rare yet potentially deadly viral illness that can prove fatal without swift medical attention. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says symptoms can include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, and in some cases, internal and external bleeding. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual or contaminated materials. Unlike common respiratory illnesses, it cannot be transmitted through the air.

Impact on British Tourists

Mauritius remains accessible to the majority of international visitors, including British tourists flying directly from the UK. The latest restrictions apply specifically to people who have recently travelled through or been present in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan. The FCDO urges travellers to verify the most up-to-date entry requirements with their airline and keep a close eye on official government guidance, as regulations can be subject to change at short notice.
