British holidaymakers planning a trip to Greece this summer are being urged to learn four essential Greek phrases before they depart. A travel expert named Dimitri has warned that failing to do so may lead to less smooth interactions with locals.
Why Learn Greek Phrases?
With new regulations like the Entry/Exit System (EES) and QR codes being introduced, travellers already have much to remember. However, Dimitri emphasises that knowing a few words in Greek can make a significant difference. He stated: "Don't come to Greece this summer if you don't know these four expressions."
The Four Key Phrases
- Kalimera (Καλημέρα): Meaning "good morning," this greeting is used during the daytime. Pronounce it "KA-lee-ME-ra," stressing the second syllable.
- Kalispera (Καλησπέρα): Meaning "good evening," this is appropriate from late afternoon onwards. Say "KA-lee-SPE-ra."
- Efharisto (Ευχαριστώ): Meaning "thank you." Pronounce it "ef-ha-ri-STO" with a soft guttural 'h' sound.
- Parakalo (Παρακαλώ): Meaning "you're welcome" or "please." Pronounce it "pa-ra-ka-LO."
Mastering these phrases shows locals that you have made an effort, and it can help you feel more at ease. Dimitri added: "A friendly tone and a smile make these phrases more natural and appreciated."
Reactions from Travellers
Social media users praised the advice. One commenter said: "Having lived in Greece, it's great to see this. Learning the language is a plus." Another noted: "I learned these whilst in Greece! The locals were so friendly and loved that we wanted to speak with them in their language." A humorous suggestion was to simply say "gyro," referencing the popular Greek street food.
