Residents in Wellington and Auckland are preparing for extreme weather conditions as forecasters predict torrential rain and powerful winds sweeping across New Zealand's North Island.
The MetService has issued severe weather warnings, with up to 140mm of rain expected in some areas over the next 24 hours. Authorities warn that the deluge could cause dangerous flooding and landslides, particularly in already saturated regions.
Transport Disruptions Expected
Transport officials are advising travellers to expect significant disruptions:
- Multiple road closures anticipated in flood-prone areas
- Ferry services between islands may be suspended
- Flight delays likely at Wellington and Auckland airports
Emergency Services on Standby
Emergency response teams across the region have been placed on high alert. "We're particularly concerned about vulnerable communities in low-lying areas," said a Civil Defence spokesperson. Residents in at-risk zones are being advised to:
- Prepare emergency kits with essential supplies
- Secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles
- Monitor official channels for evacuation notices
The severe weather comes just weeks after similar storms caused millions in damage across the North Island. Meteorologists attribute the intense rainfall to a deep low-pressure system moving across the Tasman Sea.
