Why British Heatwaves Feel Worse: The Science Behind the Struggle

As the UK swelters in temperatures reaching 34°C, Americans have been quick to mock Brits for struggling with the heat. However, the reality is that British homes and infrastructure are simply not designed for such conditions.

While nine out of ten US homes have air-conditioning, only two out of ten in the UK do. British homes are built from brick, which retains heat, unlike the timber construction common in the US. This means that during prolonged hot weather, the walls store thermal energy, keeping homes warm even at night.

Humidity also plays a key role. The UK's island geography leads to high humidity levels, currently exceeding 80% in London. High humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate, reducing the body's ability to cool down. In contrast, Arizona's humidity is typically around 40%.

Southern European countries cope better with heat through passive cooling methods: whitewashed walls, shutters, and tile or marble floors that stay cool. The UK lacks such adaptations, making heatwaves particularly challenging.

So, while 34°C may seem mild compared to Phoenix's 41°C, the combination of inadequate infrastructure, heat-retaining buildings, and high humidity makes British heatwaves uniquely uncomfortable.
